Is drug allergy genetic? Drug allergies are abnormal reactions of the immune system to a medication. In many cases, the allergic reactions are mild. Severe cases can lead to shock and may be life-threatening. Though certain reactions are mostly incalculable, genetic polymorphisms of specific genes can drive patients to allergy. These genetic allergies causing victims usually show familial and ethnic clustering. This is why we regularly observe doctors questioning for a family history of any drug allergy. Is someone of your family allergic to a specific drug or type of drug?
